JUNE 2010 ECS NEWSLETTER
Mustang Musings
The school year is coming
to an end! The months of May and June are always very busy and this year has
been no different. The month of May included a very well attended Success
is
Here program created for the high school students. This presentation
included local professionals and tradespersons who showed students that Eston is
a great place to live and that excellence is attainable when you are from this
great town! The Junior Drama Club presented Circus Circus to an
audience that was thrilled with the acting and vocal talent of the group. What
an awesome performance! On May 11th, the senior high students had a
Track and Field Day! It was a great day as the weather cooperated and many of
our athletes moved on to sectionals in Kindersley a week later. In some
slippery conditions in Saskatoon on Monday, May 31st, 6 of our
students moved on to provincial competition. Taran Robinson will be competing
in the 100 and 200 meter races as well as the Triple Jump and the Relay. The
Senior group will include Monty Massey (400 meter), Devin Serfas, Andrew Schmidt
and Jayde Hayden who will all attempt new and greater distances in the shot put
competition. Ben Faraday also qualified for provincials in the hurdles event.
The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra presented Tatterhood to the
elementary students on May 31st. It was exciting to see the musical
talent on display in our school! On June 3rd, Ms. Olafson will be
hosting the Eston Composite School Annual Art Show. Come out and see
some fantastic creations the students have made! Our Kindergarten class will
be celebrating their graduation on June 23rd. We will hosting this
event in the school library. The final exam schedule has been made for
senior/junior high students and all students have been given a copy. Exams will
run on June 23rd-June 28th. Students are reminded that
when exams are finished there is a study hall available. Students may choose to
go home after their exam . All students are required to be in the exam room for
a minimum of one hour. Good luck to all students with their finals. Have a
great summer!

Regional Heritage Fair
Submitted by Ms. Jodi
Bjornerud

Eight students
from Grades 4-6 attended the Regional Heritage Fair in Saskatoon on May 6th and
7th. Those making the trip included Brett Colley, Emily Pinter, Ashton Mutch,
Chase Elaschuk, Lauren Sauser, Samantha Andrew, Tali Hansen, and Justin Skjei.
Students took part in Opening Ceremonies on Thursday evening as well as having
their projects judged. Friday saw large school groups and community members
passing through to take in the work that was put into all of the projects
there. Various activities were organized for the students on Friday morning,
including dance and games. Awards and Closing Ceremonies took place Friday
afternoon, with Justin Skjei receiving an award for his project on a Heritage
Building. The students were great ambassadors for our school and should be
proud of their hard work!
Grade
4/5 Field Trip
- submitted by Ms. Jodi Bjornerud and Mrs. Tawna Hansen
On May 18th and
19th the Grade 4 and 5 classes took part in a field trip to Regina. The first
stop was at the Legislative Buildings where we had a tour and met with our MLA,
Mr. Jim Reiter, who took us into the Premier's Office as well as the room where
the Cabinet Ministers meet. We were all amazed at how big the table is that
they sit at!
We had our
picture taken with Mr. Reiter and Mr. Bjornerud before heading outside for
lunch. We returned after lunch to watch the MLA's in session. We were
introduced by 3 of the MLA's and got a chance to see first-hand, our government
in action. We then stopped at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum for a tour of the
displays there. After a quick supper we headed to the Science Centre for our
"Scales and Tails" camp in. We watched an IMAX film; had time to check out all
the displays there; made our own "animals;" got to see and touch some creatures
including a gecko, a toad and a ferret; watched a floor show which included the
guides' favorite demonstrations from all the different shows that they do (this
was a definite highlight for us!), and had pizza for a snack. The girls camped
out on the 3rd floor and the boys had the 2nd floor for the night. In the
morning we had breakfast before heading over to the Waterfowl Display Pond where
we saw ducks, geese, pelicans and bunnies. From there our travels took us to
the RCMP Heritage Centre. We went on a scavenger hunt through the new building
before lunch and took in the Sergeant Major's Parade in the Square after lunch.
It was a very warm afternoon and we were all glad that we weren't the ones out
there marching in uniforms! We saw a video about the RCMP called "Tour of Duty,"
before leaving for home. It was a fantastic field trip, with a lot of laughs, a
lot of new things learned and a lot of souveniers brought home. Thanks to our
amazing chaperones - Larry Betts, Kevin Fox, Nancy Powers, Christina Hewlitt,
Shawna Cumiskey and Christie McIvor!

Heritage . . . Did you know?
Nationalistic Pride
The
First Nations maintain a nationalistic pride as members of all distinct First
Nations and have unequivocally maintained their identity, culture, language and
all aspects of their society in spite of the external obstacles colonialism
imposed. This nationalistic pride has been deeply rooted in their character
because for centuries they lived and survived in a harsh environment and
conquered obstacles that may have threatened their existence. In Saskatchewan,
First Nations peoples are made up of four distinct nations: Cree, Saulteaux,
Dene, and Oηeti Sakowin (Dakota, Lakota and Nakota).
Jr. Golf Report
Coach: Mr. Norm Faraday
Estons Jr. Golf team battled weather and mosquitoes this spring in preparation
for competition in early June. The school hosted the sectional playoff at the
Eston Riverside Golf Course which involved golfers from Kindersley, Eatonia and
Eston. While none of our golfers advanced to the division playoff, it was a
good experience for our young team.
This years team included Brandt Carter, Makenzie Hansen, Madeleine
Christopherson, Adam MacKeracher, Lane Milton, Nick Secher, Parker Killam, Ty
Hansen and Cole Elaschuk.
