Eston Composite School operates on a 6 day timetable cycle.
Most of the courses at the Junior High Level are non-semestered while many of
the Senior High Level courses are semestered. Students in grades 10 - 12 are to
take a full timetable course load, as is deemed possible (following Division
Board Policy). Grade 12 students are allowed one open slot (spare) per semester.
3. COURSE CHANGES
Course change requests must be made within the first two weeks of
September for all non-semestered subjects or within two weeks after the start of
any semestered course. A course change form must be filled out by the student
and parent/guardian. The principal must approve of all course changes. After the
two week period changes in classes will only be done after a meeting with
parents and the teacher.
4. TEXTBOOKS
Texts are supplied to students at no charge on the condition of being returned
in good shape at the end of the course. Students who do not return texts or who
have a book showing deliberate damage will be assessed charges.
5. NOON HOUR
- Students eat in designated classrooms and will be responsible for
cleaning up. Bus students must have a permission form (signed by a
parent/guardian) filed with the office in order to be permitted to leave the
school grounds at noon.
6. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
- After school hour practices are restricted to those persons who the
supervising staff members wish to have present. School tournaments, games and
activities are under the general supervision of coaches and/or supervising staff
who have the final word on those present.
7. TELEPHONES
- Students may require the use of the telephone for special circumstance during
class time. The student must ask the teacher for permission to use the telephone
during this time. Long distance calls can only be made through the office.
Cellular Phones are not to be used during class periods (for telephone calls,
text messaging, etc.). Parents are asked to telephone the school phone number
and leave a message for their child to contact them at the break so that classes
are not disrupted.
CELLPHONES AND MP3 PLAYERS (as of January 30,2008)
Cell phones may be used during the breaks but are not to be used in class
at any time. Students are advised to leave them in their lockers or, if they
carry them, to turn them off in class. Any student caught using a cell phone
during class time will have it taken away for the remainder of the day. Refusal
to comply will result in the further disciplinary actions being taken. Teachers
will report to the principal when a cell phone is taken away and the student can
obtain the phone at the end of the day from the principal. A student who
continues to use their phone will be held responsible for their actions as
outlined in the Saskatchewan Education Act and Sun West School Division Policy.
Mp3 players are not allowed during exams. At any other time, use of these
devices is at the discretion of the teacher. Students are required to follow the
direction of the teacher when using these devices and failure to do so will be
treated in a similar manner as cell phones.
8. VENDING MACHINE / DRINK POLICY
- The drink machines are to be used only during breaks, at noon and
before and after school. Teachers have the choice to allow water in the
classroom during class with the exception being the Booster Juice which provides
students with a liquid breakfast. No pop, juice, sport drinks or other beverages
besides water is to be in the classrooms or in other places where students can
access them during class periods. This applies to exam periods.
9. MILK PROGRAM
- Students are able to purchase milk on a pre-purchase order form distributed at
the start of the school year.
- Grade 1-4 students will receive updated milk order letters throughout the
school year. The grade 1-4 student milk orders will be kept with the noon
supervisors.
- Grade 5-12 students can purchase their own “milk card” at any time during the
year from the school office. (Milk cards are set up for 20 milk at the cost of $
.60 each - totalling $12.00 for each card.) Students are responsible for their
card and any re-ordering throughout the year.
10. LOCKERS
- Each student is assigned a locker and may purchase a school combination lock.
The locker and lock are registered with the school office. Students are advised
not to reveal their lock combination or put any valuables in their lockers. The
school does not assume responsibility for items lost or stolen from lockers.
In cases where students have brought their own locks, if a student forgets the
combination and the school must break the lock for student to enter their
locker, the school does not assume the cost of breaking the lock. The lockers
are to be kept clean, so students are encouraged to regularly empty them of
unneeded material. All locks and lockers are the property of the school and not
private. The administration has the legal right to search lockers if it is
believed there is a reason to conduct a search.
11. ACCIDENTS
- In case of injury, the circumstances must be reported immediately to the
teacher in charge or to the office. Teacher in charge is asked to contact the
parents and inform them of the student injury. A written report will be
completed by the teacher, filed with the administration and sent to the board.
12. PARKING/DRIVING
- Parking in the school lot will be for staff and visitors only. Students are
NOT to be parking vehicles in the school parking lot. Student vehicles may be

corner of the school. (Arrangements have been made with the Town for use of this
lot.) Please take note of the following:
∙ the area directly behind the school storage shed is a No Parking Zone
∙ the area on th south side of school, where the extra bus is kept and the shop

visitor parking only. The street side of this space, along 7th Avenue, is where
students can be picked up and dropped off. Parents/Guardians that are here to
pick up a student may park in this 5 minute “Pick-up Zone”.

computer lab rules and policies. Failure to comply with these rules could result
in loss of privileges or other disciplinary action.
The following will be handled in accordance to Sun West Division Policy:
1. EDUCATION ACT, 1995 DUTIES OF THE STUDENT
(150) In the exercise of his/her right of access to the school of the division
and to the benefits of the educational services provided by the board of
education, every pupil shall cooperate fully with all persons employed by the
board and such other persons that have been lawfully assigned responsibilities
and functions with respect to the instructional program of the school or such
special or auxiliary services as may be provided by the board or the department
and without restricting the generality of the foregoing, every pupil shall:
a) attend school regularly and punctually
b) provide himself/herself with such supplies and materials not furnished by the
board of education as may be considered necessary to his/her courses of study by
the principal
c) Observe standards approved by the board of education with respect to
cleanliness and tidiness of person, general deportment, obedience, courtesy and
respect of the right of other persons.

employees of the board, and those employees shall be responsible to and report
to the principal in accordance with the procedures approved by the board.
2. ECS ATTENDANCE POLICY - as of June, 2008
a) Attendance and Absences
- It is the responsibility of the subject teacher to record absences and notify
the school office. Parents/students are required to account for all absences and
lates by contacting the office. Once a student has 5 unexcused absences, a
letter will be sent to parents and a meeting will be held to discuss the
situation. At 8 unexcused absences a second letter will be sent home. At 10
unexcused absences the student will be removed from the class.
The following types of responses do not qualify as excused absences from school:
- had to pay a bill
- had a hair appointment
- had to go to the bank
- had to go pick up my car
- was having lunch
- slept in
- skipped out
- needed a day off
b) Release from School
- Students who are leaving the school, other than for career work experience
classes or grade 12 spares, must obtain a release slip and must have parent
permission. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.
c) Lates
- Students are to arrive to class on time and with materials. It is the
responsibility of the subject teacher to resolve issues involving lates. The
following guidelines are based upon recommendations from meeting with students:
1st and 2nd lates - reminder
3rd and 4th lates - 15 minutes
5th and 6th lates - 30 minutes - call home to discuss with parents
7th and more lates - 1 hour
The students expressed that there must be a consistency with all lates.
3. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT POLICY:
Student support at Eston School is grounded in a belief that children will learn
from mistakes if guided and assisted through a growth process. The Sun West
School Division’s Positive Behaviour Support Policy (No. 407) will form the
foundation for student support. In combination with the School Code of Conduct,
the Student Support Policy outlines the process that will be followed within the
school.
Work Periods and Career Work Exploration Periods (as of January 30, 2008)
This is a reminder that all students who have a work period in their schedule
must sign-out at the office indicating where they will be during their work
period. Students who do not do this, after being reminded, will be required to
remain at school. Because the school is required to know where all students are
during the school day in case of an emergency, students need to indicate a
location. Students who have a scheduled CWEx period on a day other than days 2
or 3 are to be in the Resource Center working on class work. Failure to do so
will result in the student being assigned a work room.
Grade 12 Student Spares
Students who do not have a scheduled class are to indicate where they will be
during this period. Students remaining in school need to indicate where they
will be and students leaving the building will indicate this on the Spare
Sign-out form. Failure to follow these procedures will result in disciplinary
actions.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
(Approved by the ECS Staff and Local Trustees - May, 2005)
Students are encouraged to dress in an appropriate manner. The following listed
are not acceptable: hats/hoods in school, sunglasses in class, offensive
T-shirts that promote intoxicants, drugs, sexism or racism, or other clothing
inappropriate for the school setting.
This policy has been reviewed and approved by our local board of trustees.
Implementation of the policy is to be at the discretion of the principal, in
conjunction with the staff. As a staff and local board, we would encourage
parents to assist us in creating a environment conducive to learning. Clothing
that displays messages of explicit language, violence, drugs/alcohol or has
sexual connotations is inappropriate. In addition, clothing that is revealing is
disruptive to the educational atmosphere and will not be allowed. General
guidelines include a covered back, shoulders, midriff and chest area with a
suitable length for all shorts and skirts. Students who are dressed
inappropriately will be required to change.
We are aware that fashion is a manner in which youth express themselves, but it
must also be appropriate for the situation. We also realize that each particular
fashion has a place in a particular setting; therefore, we would ask for
parent’s help in creating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning.
ECS INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY - According to Sun West S. D. Policy
All students will have to sign an agreement at the beginning of each
year. Guidelines 419.1
For Parents, Staff and Students of the Sun West School Division
Introduction:
Computer technology is available to students and staff of the Sun West School
Division. We are very pleased to bring this technology to our students and staff
and believe it offers vast, diverse, and unique resources to them. Our goal, in
providing these services is to promote educational excellence in classrooms and
administrative productivity in offices.
Terms and Conditions:
Computer system access is provided through a complex network. The smooth
operation of the network relies upon the proper conduct of the end users who
must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided so that
parents/guardians, students, and staff are aware of the responsibility students
and staff are about to acquire. In general, this requires efficient, ethical and
legal use of the network resources. If a Sun West School Division user violates
any of these provisions, his or her access may be terminated and future access
could be denied.
Violations of these guidelines will be dealt with for disciplinary action by the
classroom teacher and subsequently by school administration as would be the
procedure with other student behavioral issues that require the management of a
safe and caring school environment. Violations of provincial or federal law will
be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
Acceptable Use:
The use of the Board’s computer systems must be in support of education and
research. Use of other organizations’ networks or computing resources must
comply with the rules appropriate for that network. Transmission of any material
in violation of any federal or provincial regulation is prohibited. This
includes, but is not limited to: copyrighted material, threatening or obscene
material, or material protected by trade secret. If an inappropriate site is
accidentally accessed, it is the user’s responsibility to make the supervising
teacher aware.
Privileges:
The use of the computer system is a privilege. Each student who accesses the
Board’s computer systems will be part of a discussion with a staff member about
the proper use of the system. Principals will deem what is inappropriate use for
students and their decision is final. Also, senior division administrators may
prevent access to a computer system any time as required. School administration
may deny, revoke, or suspend specific student user access. The Board expects
teachers to monitor student access for which he or she is responsible. This may
include random checks of files and/or e-mail to determine whether the systems
are being used in a manner that is consistent with the educational goals of the
Board. Students and staff accepting access to Board computer systems must
consent to such monitoring.
Responsibilities:
Students and staff are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of
computer and network etiquette. These include (but are not limited to) the
following:
1. Use the computer or network for legal activity (e.g., violating copyright or
other contracts, gaining illegal access or entry into other computers is not
legal).
2. The computer or network shall not be used for financial or commercial gain.
3. Interference with the proper operation of the Sun West School Division
systems and networks, as well as systems and networks accessible through the
Internet is not acceptable.
4. Your access to a computer or network must not disrupt the use of the
facilities by other users.
5. Network or Internet accounts owned by another individual must not be used.
6. Your network or Internet account must not be shared with another individual.
7. While accessing the Internet you must not reveal your personal address, phone
number, name, or the personal address/phone number of a colleague.
8. Vandalism of computer resources is defined as any malicious attempt to harm
or destroy hardware, software, or data of another person. This includes, but is
not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.
9. All disks are to be scanned, by the user, for viruses before use in any Sun
West School Division system.
10. When a person can identify a security problem on the network, they must
notify a school’s lead teacher or administrator. The problem should not be
demonstrated to other users.
11. Be polite. Any abusive messages to other, inappropriate language,
vulgarities, abusive or any other inappropriate language are not acceptable.
12. Engaging in any other inappropriate computer related activity (sexually
suggestive, racial or hate sites, etc.) not defined above are also not
acceptable.
Section 301.2 of the Criminal Code suggests that it is an offence to gain access
to, or use, or, attempt to gain access to, or use, a computer system without
authorization. As well, section 387(1.1) of the Criminal Code provides that the
unauthorized alteration or destruction of data or programs may be an offence.
Further, when prosecuting such an offence, the Crown prosecutor has the option
of proceeding by indictment or by a summary procedure. For extremely serious
cases under indictment, such as instances of accessing systems that affect human
life, penalties may be as high as ten years’ imprisonment. Financial penalties,
as a result of summary convictions are becoming increasingly severe. Other
provisions of Section 387 hold that the willful destruction of property, damage
of property or interference with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of
property is an offence.
Notice to Students and Parents/Guardians
The Sun West School Division and the staff of the Sun West School Division
do not guarantee that any functions, facilities, or services accessed through
its network, including the Internet, will be free of defects or errors.
Accordingly, the Sun West School Division and its employees are not responsible
for any loss or damages associated with its network including losses associated
with interruptions in service or loss of data. Users use Sun West School
Division accounts at their own risk and are responsible for making their own
arrangements to secure their data.
The Sun West School Division and its employees are not responsible for the
accuracy, quality, or integrity of information obtained through or stored on the
Sun West School Division network.

the school level, or of the policies and regulations of the Sun West School
Division. The search will be reasonable and related to the suspected violation.
As well, any type of web page design must first be filtered through the teacher.
STUDENT EXAM REGULATIONS
1. Students are responsible for being prepared to write an examination on the
