KYLE COMPOSITE SCHOOL

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES

When the winter weather arrives, it is important for parents of bus students to know the procedure for transporting students.

1.   Kyle School will remain open and teachers will be in attendance. Town students are expected to attend school.

2.  The bus driver shall decide whether or not it is safe to cover all or part of his/her route during inclement weather.

3.   A bus driver who decides not to make the morning run shall notify the school principal and all parents on the route.

4.  Once students are in attendance at school, a bus driver may pick them up for the purpose of transporting them to their homes only at 3:30 pm.

5.   If a bus driver decides not to make the afternoon run he/she shall notify all parents on the route of the decision.  He/she shall also contact the school of the decision prior to 3:30 pm.

6.   If you do not yet have a billet arranged for your son/daughter, whether bus or town student, please do so and notify the school secretary

It is clearly the decision of the bus drivers whether or not to transport students. They are most familiar with the state of the roads and the driving conditions in their areas. They are also ultimately the people responsible for the safety of the students.

        PROCEDURES FOR STORM STAYED STUDENTS:

Kyle School is concerned about student safety in the event of a storm and buses not running.  The school wants  to ensure that students are transported safely or travel safely on their own from the school to either the billet’s home or the student’s home. Therefore, we will follow these guidelines:

* Kyle Students will remain in their homerooms until an adult arrives to pick them up.

                * The bus driver will notify the school and parents that his/her bus is not running.

* Parents/guardians of bus students will be phoned to verify the billet of the student(s) and to arrange for picking up the student(s) at school. Parents will be asked to phone the billet(s) to make sure someone is at home and either the parent or the billet will pick up the student(s) at the school. If the parent/guardian is unable to contact the billet, the school and the parent/guardian will follow up and make the necessary arrangements.

*Students will be told who will be picking them up.

* Students will only be released from the school with an adult. For younger children to go home with older siblings, the school requires parent/guardian notification of these arrangements.  As well, students who drive to school require parent permission to leave during stormy weather.

The  process of ensuring billets are home and every student has a ride will take time, so students may be in school after hours until their ride arrives.

              Sun West School Division:

.     Cold Weather – In cold weather, the Transportation Supervisor will check the Environment Canada website and local radio stations by 6:30 a.m. and decide if the buses will run. The decision is usually to the radio stations by 6:45 a.m.

i.    The Transportation Supervisor will also email all school principals, school secretaries,                          division office staff and bus garages.

ii.    Bus drivers are responsible for contacting parents to let them know that the buses aren’t running that day due to cold weather.

iii.    Bus cancellations will be on the school division website by 7:15 a.m.

d.     Stormy Weather – In stormy weather, the bus drivers in the affected area will consult with each other to determine whether to cancel the buses for the day. One bus driver from that area will then call the Transportation Supervisor regarding the weather conditions. When the Transportation Supervisor has enough information about the conditions, he will notify the radio stations by 7:00 a.m. and will email the schools and update the website by 7:15 a.m.

                                          i.    Bus drivers will contact parents and schools if the bus is not running that day.

e.     Radio Stations – The radio stations that will be contacted include 1210 – 1330 (Rosetown – Kindersley); CJWW 600 (Saskatoon) and 5700 (Swift Current).

f.      Routes that are cancelled in the morning due to weather conditions will not run in the afternoon.

g.     Routes that are cancelled in the morning due to mechanical problems will run in the afternoon.
